Oxy VacSM
Definition
- The injection of oxidants to oxidize contaminants in the subsurface
and break down their chemical composition.
- The more volatile byproducts from the oxidation reactions are captured
by a vacuum extraction system that is designed to recover these byproducts.
Application
- Typical vadose zone soil permeability range of 1 to >10,000 millidarcies
(equivalent of 10E-5 to 10E-1 cm/s hydraulic conductivity).
- Semi-volatile and non-volatile contaminants in the unsaturated and
saturated zone.
- DNAPL pools in the saturated zone.
Unique Characteristics
- Breaks down contaminant compounds by oxidation, ultimately mineralizing
the compound with complete oxidation.
- The exothermic oxidation reaction heats the subsurface soil matrix.
- May also increase biodegradation activity by the addition of electron
acceptors.
