MTBE SOURCE AREA TREATMENT INTRODUCTION Treatment of MTBE at the source area provides many advantages to site owners.  Reducing the quantity of MTBE in the groundwater in a relatively localized area reduces the total volume of groundwater that will have to be treated later if treatment begins after the MTBE has migrated in the groundwater down gradient.  This source area treatment translates to costs savings for owners by reducing the amount of groundwater to be treated.  Even if MTBE has migrated treatment at the source will still reduce the long term costs of remediation by minimizing the mass of MTBE that spreads.
